Terms of Service
Last updated: August 19, 2026
Version: 1.0
We provide inkproof – Tattoo LAB (displayed as “inkproof” on the Home Screen, the “App”). These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern your rights and obligations when downloading, installing, accessing, or using the App.
1. Acceptance of Terms and Eligibility
- By downloading, installing, accessing, or using the App, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
- You must use the App in accordance with the laws that apply where you are located. If local law does not permit you to accept these Terms or use the App, you must stop using it.
2. The Service
- Based on the English given name, optional surname, pronunciation correction, region, Traditional or Simplified Chinese preference, gender or gender-neutral setting, selected traits, and style preferences you enter, the App uses its built-in character database to generate and display suggested Chinese names, pinyin, meanings, example words, pronunciations, stroke order, and related explanations.
- Core name generation, character replacement, pronunciation analysis, meaning lookup, and stroke-order lookup are performed on your device.
- The App may allow you to save names, generate share cards, and send content through the iOS share sheet.
- We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features when reasonably necessary for maintenance, security, legal compliance, changes to third-party services, or product improvement. If a material change affects your rights, we will provide reasonable notice.
- You retain any rights you lawfully hold in the content you enter. The App processes your input on your device, and your use of the App does not transfer ownership of that content to us.
- You must have the right to use any names or other information you enter. Do not enter another person’s personal or confidential information without authorization, or sensitive information the App does not require, such as a national identification number, passport number, financial information, medical information, or precise address.
- If you create a name for another person or enter information concerning a minor, you must first obtain lawful authorization from that person or the person’s legal representative.
4. Language, Glyph, Pronunciation, and Stroke-Order Limitations
- The same Chinese character may have different glyph forms, stroke counts, pronunciations, meanings, or usage conventions under standards used in Taiwan, mainland China, Japan, or other regions.
- The App’s stroke-order data is derived from Arphic’s Kai (楷) typefaces, so the stroke shapes follow Kai conventions. How Kai divides certain components, and the resulting stroke counts, may differ from particular textbooks, calligraphy traditions, or official stroke-order tables (for example, the grass radical 艹 is counted as three or four strokes depending on the standard). The App provides this as a visual reference and does not guarantee compliance with the requirements of any school, examination, calligraphy tradition, or government standard.
- System speech, pinyin, example words, translations, and character meanings may vary according to the source data, speech engine, device language, or content updates. They may not be suitable for every accent, dialect, or professional context.
- A tattoo is difficult to reverse. Before using a name for a tattoo, printing, merchandise, identification document, or public display, you should separately consult a trusted native Chinese speaker and any relevant professional.
5. Acceptable Use
You must not:
- use the App for unlawful, fraudulent, harassing, hateful, infringing, impersonating, or harmful conduct;
- collect, enter, disclose, or process another person’s personal or confidential information without authorization;
- distribute malware, interfere with the App, or attempt to gain unauthorized access to systems or data; or
- reverse engineer, decrypt, rent, resell, or create an unauthorized derivative service from the App, except where applicable law expressly permits it.
We may take reasonable security measures in response to suspected misuse.
- Names you save are stored on your device by default. Removing the App, erasing the device, or changing system backup settings may result in data loss.
- When you use a sharing feature, the content is handled by the system feature or third-party app you select. That third party’s own terms and privacy policy apply.
- You are responsible for checking the content and recipient before sharing and for the consequences of your sharing activity.
7. Intellectual Property in the App
Except for the third-party content listed in Section 8 and input content in which you lawfully hold rights, the App’s name, icon, interface, design, code, arrangement, documentation, and other content are owned by us or our licensors. Without written permission, you may not reproduce, distribute, publicly transmit, modify, sell, or commercially exploit them beyond what is necessary for ordinary use of the App.
These Terms do not restrict rights granted to you under an applicable third-party open license. If these Terms conflict with the license governing specific third-party content, that third-party license controls with respect to that content.
8. Third-Party Content and Open-License Notices
The App uses the following data and fonts under public licenses that permit their use, modification, and distribution. The original authors and licensors do not sponsor, endorse, or warrant the App merely because their content is used in it.

- Publisher: MDBG. The original CEDICT copyright notice includes Copyright © 1997, 1998 Paul Andrew Denisowski.
- License: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)
- The App uses Traditional–Simplified mappings, pinyin, example words, and definitions from CC-CEDICT and performs data selection, extraction, format conversion, pinyin display conversion, sorting, and interface-oriented arrangement. Content derived from CC-CEDICT that constitutes adapted material is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. That license does not extend to separable code, designs, or content in the App that are not derived from CC-CEDICT.
- Name: the
graphics.txt dataset from Make Me a Hanzi
- That dataset is derived from the Arphic PL UKai and Arphic PL KaitiM GB typefaces, Copyright © 1999 Arphic Technology Co., Ltd.
- License: the Arphic Public License. The full licence text ships with the App as
ARPHICPL.TXT.
- Our modifications, all made on 2026-08-14: selecting the glyphs the App’s character database needs, flipping the font coordinate system to screen coordinates, normalising the paths to absolute commands, and compressing them with deflate. No outline is redrawn, reshaped or re-ordered. The modified stroke data remains under the same licence.
- As required by section 2 of the Arphic Public License, the modifications and the build script that produces them are published at https://aa-prime-studio.github.io/ink/stroke-data, where any third party may obtain them under the same licence.

8.5 Unicode Unihan Database
- Name: Unicode Unihan Database
- Copyright © 1991–2026 Unicode, Inc.
- License: Unicode License v3
- The App uses its pinyin, stroke-count, radical, Traditional–Simplified variant, and related dictionary fields after filtering, organizing, and converting the data into a database format.
8.6 Embedded Chinese Fonts
- The primary Traditional Chinese display font is Iansui, Copyright © 2025 The Iansui Project Authors.
- The Traditional Chinese detail font is LXGW WenKai TC, Copyright © 2022–2026 The LXGW WenKai Project Authors. That typeface is derived from Klee One, and the font file metadata also carries Copyright © 2020 The Klee Project Authors.
- The Simplified Chinese font is Noto Serif Simplified Chinese. The current font file metadata states Copyright © 2017–2024 Adobe, while the accompanying OFL.txt retains Copyright © 2012 Google Inc. All Rights Reserved.
- These fonts are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The App includes subsetted and renamed versions together with the complete OFL 1.1 license text for each font. The OFL does not apply to documents or images created using the fonts.
8.7 Chinese-Names-Corpus (naming-frequency statistics)
- Name: Chinese-Names-Corpus
- License: Apache License, Version 2.0. The full license text ships with the App as
ChineseNamesCorpus-Apache2.txt, together with a NOTICE describing our changes.
- What the App uses: aggregate per-character statistics computed from that corpus of Chinese personal names — how often each character is used in given names, and how that use splits between men’s and women’s names. The App uses these figures to rank character suggestions and to label a character’s gender lean.
- Our modifications: family names were stripped from each entry using the corpus’s own surname list, the remaining given names were converted to Traditional Chinese with OpenCC, and per-character counts were tallied. No part of the corpus itself — no personal name, and no record from it — is included in or distributed with the App. Only the aggregate counts are used.
9. Service and Results Disclaimer
- To the maximum extent permitted by law, the App and third-party data are provided “as is” and “as available.” We do not warrant uninterrupted, error-free, or completely secure operation, or that any name, meaning, pronunciation, stroke order, or cultural assessment will be accurate, complete, appropriate, or suitable for your particular purpose.
- Changes or interruptions affecting your device, operating system, data sources, or system speech services may make some features temporarily unavailable.
10. Limitation of Liability
- You are responsible for your final choice of name and for any tattoo, registration, printing, commercial use, public sharing, or other use of the results.
- To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential damages arising from the use of or inability to use the App or from reliance on third-party data.
- These Terms do not exclude or restrict consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded or restricted, nor do they exclude liability for our willful misconduct or gross negligence where such liability cannot lawfully be excluded. If the law where you live does not permit a particular exclusion or limitation, that exclusion or limitation applies only to the extent permitted by law.
11. Violations, Suspension, and Termination
- You may stop using and remove the App at any time.
- If you violate these Terms, compromise service security, or create legal risk, we may restrict or discontinue relevant features.
- Provisions that by their nature should survive termination—including provisions concerning intellectual property, third-party licenses, disclaimers, limitations of liability, governing law, and dispute resolution—will remain in effect.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms because of changes to features, data practices, third-party services, laws, or platform requirements. We will provide reasonable advance notice of material changes through an in-app notice, release notes, or another reasonable method. If the law requires renewed consent, the change will apply only after we obtain it. If you do not agree to a change, you should stop using the affected feature or the App.
13. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Taipei District Court in Taiwan will have jurisdiction as the court of first instance over disputes arising from these Terms or the App, except where mandatory consumer-protection law requires otherwise.
14. General Terms
- If any part of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in effect.
- Our failure to exercise a right under these Terms immediately does not waive that right.
- These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the agreement between you and us concerning use of the App. Third-party content remains subject to its applicable license terms.
